SOURCES / METHODS / LIMITS

A model built from public data.

The landscape combines terrain, aerial imagery, mapped outlines, and height observations. Coverage and dates differ by source. Each building’s inspector identifies its footprint and height source.

Source vintages and acquisition dates are recorded in the downloadable manifests.

City boundary
US Census TIGER/Line, 2024 ↗

The city outline is shown in gold. The model includes a 400-meter context skirt outside it.

OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap contributors · ODbL ↗

Mapped buildings, roads, railways, land use, and water. The acquisition manifest records the extract date.

Additional buildings
Microsoft / Riverside County · ODbL ↗

Additional outlines were extracted from 2014–2015 aerial imagery. They may include buildings since removed and omit later construction. OSM outlines take priority where the sources overlap. County floor counts, when available, have an unspecified observation date.

Terrain & heights
USGS 3D Elevation Program ↗

Lidar heights are used where coverage exists. Elsewhere, building heights are estimated from recorded floor counts, OSM heights, or land-use defaults. Roof shapes are inferred from height data; wall colors and facade details are generalized.

Aerial imagery & trees
USDA National Agriculture Imagery Program ↗

Terrain color comes from NAIP aerial imagery. Trees require both vegetation imagery and suitable height data; the model does not represent a complete tree inventory.
